The Island of Coeurile: The Heart of a Lost World
At the center of all nine realms lies Coeurîle, an island that once held the most powerful and sacred symbol in all of Emarion: the Everflame Tree. Mortals believed that the Everflame was the source of Life and Death. Its massive, gnarled form stretched to the clouds, with branches made of fire and roots buried deep into the Sacred Sea. It was not just a tree, but a living force that represented balance, creation, and the connection between life and death.
Ancient mortals believed that all life began as sparks that fell from the branches of the Everflame. These glowing seeds took root in the earth, giving rise to all living things, each granted a life to be lived in the world. When that life came to an end, the Old Gods would judge the soul and determine whether it was worthy to return to the tree. So when their bodies died, the chosen souls were welcomed back into the Everflame’s eternal fire. If the soul was judged unworthy however, the Old Gods would destroy them completely, banishing them to an existence without the warmth of the Everflame.
The Everflame shaped how mortals understood life, death, and their place in the world. It symbolized a time when power was shared, not controlled, and when mortals were spiritually connected to something greater than themselves. That connection was severed with the arrival of the Kindred. After the Old Gods vanished, the nine Kindred siblings rose to power and reshaped the world through an event known as the Forging. As they divided Emarion into nine realms and established their rule, they also made a deliberate choice to cut down the Everflame Tree. As a result of the tree’s death, godstone was found in its place. The Kindred then used this special stone to build their own Temple of worship. This act was a calculated move to erase the belief in the old gods and eliminate a power source that had once belonged to mortals.
The impact of this decision was transformative for the Island of Coeurîle, now becoming a place where magic can no longer function. Because of the godstones’ natural magic siphoning abilities, the island renders even the most powerful beings powerless. This makes Coeurîle both sacred and dangerous (specifically for those that are stripped of their magic). While the impact on their magic is temporary, even a moment without their powers is dangerous for the descended; they hate being vulnerable. The crowns of Emarion have come to understand the benefit to this island’s abilities however, by using it as a neutral ground to meet with other crowns and make decisions together, without the possible magical threat to one another.
Coeurîle will always grieve the sacred power it once inhabited. Where the Everflame once burned as a symbol of life, balance, and connection, the godstone temple now stands as a symbol that represents control, division, and authority. Coeurîle has become a physical reminder of the shift in power from the Old Gods to the Kindred, and from a shared source of life to a system built on hierarchy.
Though the Everflame is gone, its meaning has not fully disappeared. In quiet corners of the world, some mortals still remember what it once represented. Coeurîle remains at the center of Emarion not just in location, but in significance. Regardless of what inhabits it, it will always be a place where both Descended and mortals alike look to for the meaning of life.
